Inspired by the notorious and beautiful star of the Victorian and Edwardian stage and mistress of a King, who both mesmerized and scandalized Victorian society and besides her fame, was a setter of Fashion--ladies of the time avidly copied her hats & clothes.....most notably the "Langtry Turban" which she herself created one day from a length of velvet and made Victorian millinery history.....! These hats are exquisite handsewn beauties with 100% pure silk drapings and almost all-antique laces, silks, feathers and embellishments used, giving them a wonderfully historically accurate look. Two views of a fabulous "Lillie style" 1870's bonnet that can also be worn as a later-style toque just by pinning up the long sashes on top and wearing it more on the top of the head...otherwise this is a true 1870's bonnet when worn as shown, fully shirred and lined with iridescent silk, with gorgeous silk taffeta sashes, ruchings and furbelows of vintage silk ribbon along with antique laces on the edge and several floaty ostrich plumes. My own version of the "Langtry Turban"....which Lillie designed one day in the 1870's when she could not find a suitably matching hat to go with a certain outfit....and very creatively and ingeniously made herself a fashionable turban-type hat from a draped piece of velvet...after seeing her wear this original design, the next day all of London's elegant ladies were imitating it and it became a world wide fashion statement! This exquisite hat inspired by Lillie's turban sensation is made of black silk taffeta and black silk satin, elaborately draped and punctuated with gorgeous antique steel-beaded ornamentation, antique Victorian silver beadwork motifs and a vintage ivory ostrich feather plume as well as a side ornament of black feathers.....can be worn either as a Victorian style turban or more of an Edwardian toque depending on how you tilt it/situate it on the head and what hairstyle is worn with it....An exquisite millinery piece that looks very rich with black outfits whether Edwardian or Victorian!
